Roanoke City Police beefing up DUI enforcement

Posted: Updated:

To prepare for St. Patrick's Day, Roanoke City Police will be placing extra officers on the roads looking specifically for signs of drinking and driving.

There will be about six extra officers out each weekend.

The department will use its I-STAR technology to determine where the officers should be placed.

The system will be able to map out where the most DUI incidents have occurred over the last year.

Some areas near downtown and Orange Avenue are hotspots for drinking activity.

Last year, there were two DUI accidents and eight arrests in Roanoke City over the St. Patricks Day weekend.

The hope is that the increased visibility during the weekends prior to the holiday this year will help lower the number of accidents.

The extra enforcement will cost about $4500.

That's being covered by a State Incentive Grant given to the Roanoke Prevention Alliance.

Thanks to the original $121,000 grant, the alliance has been working with police over the last year to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes in Roanoke City.

It was recently given a $50,000 dollar extension which will cover expenses through May.

That money will be used to place more officers on the roads over the next three months that will be specifically looking for signs of drinking and driving.

There is also one planned checkpoint.

In addition to the enforcement, the alliance will revamp it's "What's Your Plan" media campaign.

That will be unveiled during the week of St. Patrick's Day.

There is a potential to receive more funding which could extend the campaign through the end of the year.

The alliance expects to find out more later this spring.
