There are boxes filled with stacks of papers and records to the mysteries of how some people in Roanoke County were killed.

"They're all human beings," says Adam Thompson, special investigator with Roanoke County police. "They're either missing and or have been killed in some violent way and they deserve to have their case looked at and for us to find the person."

Investigator Thompson told us the police department is taking a closer look at all the county's cold cases. Recently, police have looked into the murder of Beverly Haygood.

Haygood was found murdered in her home in 2002. She was found in the garage with several gunshot wounds.

Unfortunately, investigator Thompson told us the cases get harder and harder to solve as more time passes. A big part of getting a break is someone coming forward.

We spoke to Haygood's son, Dan Lilly, who told us he's hoping it'll happen soon.

"I wake up 2 to 3 in the morning and it's hard to go back to sleep wondering what happened and looking for answers," says Lilly.

Investigator Thompson says the families and loved ones affected play a big role in his motivation and hopes with the public's help he'll be able to say what happened.
