11 Lynchburg schools receive bomb threats

Posted: Updated:
Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m., Lynchburg City Schools received the first of 11 total bomb threats at schools throughout the division.

The first site was Dearington Elementary School for Innovation.

Staff members at each schoschool they  did exactly what they have been trained and informed to do in this situation in accordance with each school’s individual School Crisis Management Plan.

School officials say that immediately following the threat, teachers and staff followed the proper procedures to evacuate all students safely and efficiently. Each school acted professionally and without panic. As we were able, we contacted parents of students at the schools as they received the threats. Eventually it was determined that a division-wide call should go out once the frequency of threats increased.

The Lynchburg Police Department was immediately contacted following each threat, and a thorough search was conducted using explosive detection dogs, state police bomb teams, and visual searches throughout the buildings. Once the LPD ruled that there was no threat, students and staff were allowed back into the buildings.
