Ohio college asks for St. Patrick's Day restraint

Posted: Updated:

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The University of Dayton is asking students to think about the school's reputation and their own safety as St. Patrick's Day approaches.

The Dayton Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1eBBl8U) that school officials sent a letter this week asking students to "make good decisions" and "consider the consequences" of their actions.

The letter comes after the St. Patrick's Day melee at the school last year, when more than 1,000 people gathered in the early-morning hours of March 17 at the school in southwestern Ohio.

Police responding to a false alarm were met by beer bottle-throwing partiers. The university's president was escorted from the scene after he was hit by a police shield while investigating the ruckus. At least 11 cars were damaged.
