Stateline Drive-In goes digital

ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) -

A half a century old drive-in movie theater in Elizabethton, is coming back this April with the latest in drive-in technology.

After almost having to shut its doors for good this season, the Stateline Drive-In won a contest through Honda, giving it an 80-thousand dollar projector.

The nationwide contest picked winners based on who got the most votes in their community.

Owner Andy Wetzel says the community's votes, and this projector is what saved this theater, because movie companies are starting to sell only digital movies, rather than the traditional film strips.

"We would've probably had to shut down. We don't do the kind of business here to make payments and things like that on projectors, we would've probably had to just close it and looks for other options, other things to do up here other than actually show movies, so it kept us alive," Wetzel said.

The projector was installed last week.

Wetzel said it will be a much clearer picture and better sound now that they've made the move to digital.

He says he hopes to open back up in early April.
