12:37 A.M. Update: It is what Fire and E.M.S. Chief Kenneth Draper calls the "Biggest fire he has seen in Martinsville." The fire is contained but is expected to burn through the night.

The American Furniture building is made of old hard wood lumber and crews say that makes it very hard to extinguish.

Chief Draper says the cause of the fire is unknown, and may never be known due to the extent of the damage. The building is a total loss.

Draper says the fire is thought to have originated at the backside of the building located on the corner of Broad Street and Aaron Street.

The building has been abandoned for several years, but was in the process of being sold to a business owner;negotiationss that obviously will no longer go through.

No one was in the building at the time, and no one was injured.
