DURHAM, N.C. -

A Duke University student who says she performs in adult films is revealing the stage name she uses, and photos of herself.

In an essay on the xojane.com website, the freshman, who goes by Belle Knox, said she only agreed to a recent interview with the Duke Chronicle after a fraternity member saw her in an adult film and realized who she was.

She said the man promised not to reveal the fact that she appeared in pornography but then did anyway.

In an essay posted recently on xojane.com, she pointed to a double standard on campus, where she says she has faced threats.

"You want to see me naked," she wrote. "And then you want to judge me for letting you see me naked."

She did not reveal her actual name, although her photographs would certainly give that away in the Duke community.

"The truth of the matter is this: I am one identity when I am a student. I'm another when I do porn. And no one controls either -- but me.

"Today, I am choosing to reveal my porn identity to the world.

"My name is Belle Knox, and I wear my Scarlet Letter with pride."

In the lengthy story with the Duke Chronicle, she said she went to Los Angeles when not in school to participate in porn. She said her parents did not realize she did that, and that she did it in part to raise money to pay for the expensive Duke tuition.

Knox told Playboy.com that doing porn was her "only viable option" to attend Duke.

"The fact that the only viable options to pay for college are to take out gigantic student loans, to not go to college at all or to join the sex industry really says something," she said.

"We need to recognize that there's a gap between what middle-class and upper-middle-class families can pay and what they're asked to pay. We also need to stop looking at loans as a solution to fix our education system, because they're crippling our economy."
