"It's no secret that things have always been tight the budget has always been difficult," said J.D. Hancock the Wythe County Rescue Squad Executive Director. He says their difficulties now amount to $10,000 worth of debt.

When Hancock first started the department had a credit debt of fifty thousand dollars.

"We also owed some vendors some money. We have struggled for 19 months to get those things paid but we have made it by operationally, at this point i think the board of directors looked at the financials, looked at the things we looked at to move forward."

Right now the department owes $3,100 for workers comp insurance costs plus $3,900 in building insurance and $3,000 to fix their only remaining ambulance, not counting the three remaining that are also broken down.

With over $10,000 worth of bills piling up, leaders  at the Wythe County Rescue Squad say if they're not paid they'll be forced to shut down, leaving the closest ambulance service thirty minutes away in Rural Retreat.

The fire and rescue committee voted unanimously to make recommendations to the board of supervisors to pay that $10,000 in debt until quarterly state money totaling around nine thousand dollars comes in.

"I think that it shows that the county is definitely looking at it and they do understand that it is a very important, very vital service," Hancock said.

The board of supervisors will make a decision tomorrow night on whether or not to help keep the Wythe County Rescue Squad up and running.

After the emergency meeting, the rescue squad decided to extend their close date for another 30 days.
