WARNING: Fire Watch from VA Department of Forestry

Posted: Updated:
The Virginia Department of Forestry says there's a chance of a significant fire event if winds continue to pick up and we don't see more rain.

Fire crews in Salem spent the day preparing for what may be a busy 24 to 36 hours.

"Some of our worse days you would never think it based on snowfall and the rain," Deputy Regional Forester Chris Thomsen says. "So we ask people to be careful and pay attention and report suspicious people and lets' hope we all get through this in one piece."

On Tuesday, crews responded to eight fires that burned twenty acres.

Area Forester Joseph Boswell says most fires are started by people.

It's against the law to burn before 4 p.m., but he says for the next two days no one should burn anything.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a fire weather watch for wind and low humidity starting early Thursday morning. It's scheduled to end late Thursday afternoon.
