Red Cross names Roanoke City SRO Law Enforcement Hero for saving choking student

The American Red Cross and WSLS 10 team up once again for our Celebration of Heroes.

We want to tell you about this year's Law Enforcement Hero -- James Madison Middle School Resource Officer, Paul Wyatt.

Officer Wyatt was in the cafeteria during lunch one day when 7th grader Saffire Pullins choked on a piece of chicken.

With the lunchroom watching he started the Heimlich maneuver after a teacher's aide was unsuccessful.

“Once I took over, I realized at that point, I better get this right and the thought going through my mind was don't let this child die in my arms,” recalled Officer Wyatt.

“I was thinking thank God he was there, because if not I wouldn't be here right now and I'm just so happy he was able to do that,” Saffire said.

Since then the Roanoke City Police Department gave Officer Wyatt an award and now he'll accept another from the Red Cross.
