Tracking tax dollars for Roanoke tourism

Posted: Updated:
Recently, the city of Roanoke received national attention for being a tourist destination. Runner's World magazine as well as the Boston Globe newspaper featured articles about highlight the sites and scenes of the Star City.

Over the past several years, the Roanoke Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau has received hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to market the area and attract tourist.

As WSLS previously reported, the Visitor's Bureau hired a public relations firm called Geiger and Associates. The PR firm invites groups of journalists to walk through downtown and other Roanoke attractions for free. We found that using a PR firm costs about $100,000 dollars a year, part of which came from a tourism grant.
