Police to increase patrols for St. Patrick's Day weekend

ROANOKE, VA -

Don't count on luck to get you home safely if you'll be drinking this St. Patrick's Day weekend. That's the message from local police who along with state troopers will take part in Operation Lucky Strike Force.

Officers from Roanoke, Roanoke County, Town of Vinton, City of Salem and Virginia State Police will be out in force and working together in coordinated efforts to increase patrols throughout the Roanoke Valley to stop and arrest impaired drivers.

"Impaired drivers continue to cause senseless injuries and deaths on our roadways," said Roanoke County Police Chief Howard Hall in a statement. Police say a large number of traffic crashes on St. Patrick's Day are caused by people driving under the influence. They're encouraging drivers to have a designate someone to get them home.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 269 people have been senselessly killed nationwide in crashes involving drunk drivers during the St. Patrick's Day holiday from 2007 to 2011. The Virginia State Police reported three fatal crashes on St. Patrick's Day alone for 2012 and 2013 together.

They say those fatalities were preventable.
