Red Cross honors Roanoke County firefighter and police officer for saving lives on vacation

Posted: Updated:
Our Celebration of Heroes continues with our First Responder Heroes a Roanoke County firefighter and police officer who helped save lives even on vacation.

Eric Austin and Barry Brown were vacationing in North Carolina with their families when a woman and her son were caught in the rip current.

It was back in September when they were first recognized for saving lives.

The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors publicly acknowledged the police officer and fire fighter at a meeting, thanking them for risking their lives.

“I'm glad we were at the right place at the right time and I'm glad that I went.  Originally, I was supposed to work that week and at the last minute I swapped shifts, so I could go and I'm very glad that I did that way Eric wasn't by himself,” explained Firefighter Brown.

“God put us there at the right place at the right time to help them and we both feel that anybody would have done that in the situation,” Officer Austin said.

Soon they'll accept another honor from the American Red Cross.
