Ardagh Group wins award for economic impact on Roanoke County

Posted: Updated:
One manufacturing group continues to make a significant impact on the Roanoke Valley. Last August, Ardagh Group announced plans to invest $93.5 million in Roanoke County.

Recently, Trade and Industry Development magazine recognized Ardagh Group, a Luxembourg-based company, for the significant impact it has on Roanoke County.

Ardagh Group made the largest manufacturing investment in Roanoke County's history. The Roanoke County facility is expected to open in August. Currently workers are running safety and quality checks to make sure the cans are up to company standards. The testing process includes slitting, welding and forming cans to make sure they will protect materials. Ardagh spent millions of dollars on state-of-the-art equipment that will allow workers to make cans of different sizes and volumes. Plant manager, Jerry Gilbert, said the high speed production lines can mold up to 2,000 can a minute or 6.5 million cans per day. Economic development officials hope Ardagh Group's reputation as a global packaging leader will help attract more businesses to the county.

"Canline Systems invested over a million dollars to make conveyor systems for Ardagh" said Jill Loope, Roanoke County Economic Development Director. "It is already attracting interest from other suppliers and I think we will see more companies come in the future."

Down the line, local leader hope to see Ardagh Group expand operations in the county. Plant managers hope to begin production by August.
