Red Cross names Roanoke City and Salem swift water rescue teams heroes

Posted: Updated:
As we finish up our celebration of heroes we introduce you to the fire fighters who saved dozens of lives last summer.

On July 3rd  and 10th of  the Roanoke City and Salem Swift water rescue teams worked overtime saving families and kids from flooded homes, cars and even a day care.

It was on the Northside of the city on Peters Creek Road where the teams worked together to rescue 19 kids from this daycare along with pulling a family out of their flooded car.

Despite the unique territory the teams managed to get everyone to safety.

“In the 22 years I've been here I've never seen Peters Creek Road like that,” explained Lt. Mark Brown, Roanoke City Fire EMS.

“Man wholes, drainage ditches, drain pipes that could suck you in, there's a lot of stuff out there you have to think about and be ready for,” Lt. Mike Elston said, Salem Fire EMS.

A total of 28 swift water rescue team members are named Red Cross Firefighter Heroes.
