NC State to honor jerseys of Wilson, Williams

RALEIGH, N.C. - N.C. State will honor the jerseys of football greats Russell Wilson and Mario Williams, the University announced Tuesday.

Wilson will be honored April 12 at the 2014 Kay Yow Spring Football game while Williams will have his jersey recognized at a regular season home game in the fall.

“This is truly an amazing honor and I am looking forward to being back in Raleigh and Carter-Finley Stadium,” said Wilson. “My experience at NC State was an amazing one playing football and baseball but also accomplishing my goal of graduating in three years.”

Wilson led the Seattle Seahawks to victory in Super Bowl XLVIII over the Denver Broncos in February.

During his time at N.C. State, Wilson was the first freshman quarterback in ACC history to be named All-ACC.
He also won ACC Rookie of the Year in 2008.

Williams, who was named an All-American by Sports Illustrated in 2005, is the only player in ACC history taken No. 1 in the NFL Draft.

“I am very appreciative that N.C. State has decided to honor me and it will be very special to see my name in Carter-Finley Stadium. It's a special place and I will always call it home,” Williams said.

He holds school records for single-season tackles for loss with 27.5 and sacks with 14.5.

Wilson’s No. 16 and Williams’ No. 9 will continue to be worn by Wolfpack players.  The head coach will designate who wears those numbers. Players wearing those numbers will also wear a patch honoring Wilson or Williams.

The annual Kay Yow Spring Game will kick off at 1 p.m.
