DURHAM, N.C. -

A wreck in Durham shut down East End Avenue, from Highway 70 to Angier Avenue Friday morning, according to authorities.

The wreck happened at approximately 3:06 a.m. when the driver of an Acura was traveling at a high rate of speed drifted across the opposite lane and slammed into trees on the north side of the road, Durham police said. The impact caused the vehicle to break into several pieces and catch fire.

The driver was able to extricate himself from the wreckage and then ran into the woods where he was found by first responders.

He was transported by EMS to the hospital to receive treatment for a right knee injury, two broken arms and numerous facial lacerations.

The driver, whose name has not been released, has been charged with driving while impaired, no operator’s license and careless and reckless driving.

The road was closed for approximately two hours as officers investigated and cleared the debris on scene. The road is now open for traffic.
