UNC faculty looks to move on from academic scandal

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The academic scandal that has rocked UNC-Chapel Hill is still on the minds of school leaders.

Friday afternoon, the faculty met to discuss many things. Among them, how they can move on from the scandal.

On March 25, academic advisor Mary Willingham appeared on “HBO Real Sports” and “ESPN’s Outside the Lines” and claimed many athletes were pushed to easier classes with limited or no supervision.

She’s presented data in the past that states as many as 60 percent of athletes in her study couldn't read at a high school level.  Some of them were called illiterate.

School leaders said they are working to repair the image the scandal has brought on and looking towards the future.

“I think the best to right now is to stay the course,” said Chair of Faculty Athletics, Joy Renner.  “We are doing some great modifications in addition to the plan and it’s not over reacting to once source, one story or one piece to it.  We are putting together a whole host of data, a whole host of evidence based kinds of analysis and discussions about how we’ve been doing and what we want to do in the future. I’m very optimistic.”

A data analysis of Willingham’s research is expected to be released in a week or more.
