NC court grants new trial for Jason Young

RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina Court of Appeals has granted a new murder trial for Jason Young after he was convicted in 2012 of murdering his pregnant wife in 2006.

Jason Young is serving life in prison for first-degree murder in the November 2006 murder of his wife Michelle Young. Young was five months pregnant when she was killed in her Wake County home.

The medical examiner said Michelle died from blunt force trauma to her head and body. The examiner testified that Michelle was hit with "a heavy blunt object."

A grand jury indicted Young in December 2009 on a first-degree murder charge. On June 27, 2011, a mistrial was declared because the jury was deadlocked eight to four to acquit Young.

Young was then retried in January 2012 in Wake County Superior Court and was found guilty of first-degree murder on March 5, 2012.

Young appealed the 2012 conviction in December 2013 saying the judge should not have allowed evidence of a wrongful death lawsuit and a custody challenge for his daughter.

Young has claimed he was in Virginia for a business trip at the time of his wife's murder.
