MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA - UPDATE: A new detour that re-routes traffic from I-81 in Christiansburg onto Route 460 is giving drivers a major headache.

"Around Elliston everything came to a dead stop," driver Ron Bruintjes says.

Ron Bruintjes says it usually takes him 20 minutes to get from Christiansburg to Salem, but instead it took him two hours. He says a lot of his co-workers were late to work.

We took some of your concerns about the traffic to V-DOT spokesperson Jamie Smith. She says they are fixing the pavement on northbound 81 between mile markers 121 to 125. She says this is a stretch of road that's determining because of drainage issues under the asphalt.

We asked why the detour only allows for one lane on 460 to open from Christiansburg to Dixie Caverns.

"The detour was chosen because it only lasted 8 days," V-DOT spokesperson Jamie Smith says. "The other option would be a permanent lane closure which would have brought in barricades and be a closure of 24 hours, 7 days a week, for months"

She says the key is be patient and leave early. The headache is expected to be over by next Monday.

Nighttime Detour (10 p.m. - 6 a.m.):
