ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke City Jail started a new video visitation system through Securus technologies for inmates and visitors.

People have to set up appointments at least 24 hours in advance for a video visit. The visit will take place in the jail's lobby and the inmate will be in their housing quarters.

Sheriff Tim Allen says the system will help with security and limit contraband that can be brought in with regular visitation. It also cuts the time spent on security checks too.

Video visitation will also increase times when an inmate can get a visit. With regular visits, most of them happened during the evenings and now people can stop by during the day too.

"It is a plus to be able to have young children not be out at night to be able to come during the day and schedule a visit," says Sheriff Allen.

Right now the program is still in the testing phase but the sheriff wants to expand it to homes then people wouldn't have to go to downtown Roanoke to speak to an inmate.
