Blacksburg to get new senior friendly housing complex

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg seniors will soon get a housing unit designed specifically for them.  The eight-unit complex on Grissom Lane will feature universal design, and much of it will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.  It is designed for people 55 years of age and older. Town leaders say the senior population in the New River Valley is expected to double within the next 20 years, and they want a place where people can age comfortably and safely without moving to assisted living.

Community Housing Partners in Christiansburg is building and managing the site, and architect Joshua Galloway says, "It's the bathrooms and kitchens that are often the big challenges, and so it's just about creating open floor plans so you have clear floor areas at each of the fixtures and appliances, so someone in front of the range has equal access to reach all the different elements."

The project is expected to be finished in October, and the application process will begin in July.
