"An investigation into employee safety at The Roanoke Times began today," explains Southwest Regional Health Director of The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, Paul Saunier.

WSLS checked with Roanoke City and found that a Commercial Asbestos Permit was issued April 2nd for the "removal and disposal of approximately forty square feet of transite panels from the 3rd floor" at Times-World Corporation located at 201 Campbell Avenue. The Roanoke Times building is located at 201 Campbell Avenue.

A representative of Contractor Strahle Construction the company listed on the permit explained over the phone that the removal and disposal of those panels happened last week.

Saunier confirmed the complaint his office received about asbestos removal and concern for employee safety is directly related to the asbestos that was removed from 3rd floor offices at the newspaper last week.

This is not the first time the building has had asbestos removed.

According to Roanoke City's database, asbestos was removed from the building in 2007 and in 2010.

We checked to see if the Roanoke Times had a building permit for the work that is currently being done on the third floor and found the last building permit was for roof construction from 2007. The city was not aware of any current projects requiring a building permit inside the building but will be following up with the newspaper to see if in fact the work requires a permit.

Saunier explains the V.D.L.I. has six months to complete it's review of the facts regarding the complaint against the Roanoke Times. He says that report will likely be finished within thirty days.

When we contacted the Roanoke Times this morning, editor Joe Stinnett told me over the phone, "Our publisher is out of the office today. I have no comment on that."

Upon learning about the renovation project at The Roanoke Times, Roanoke City sent an inspector over this afternoon and informed the contractor that a permit was needed for the current renovation.

“Strahle Construction then applied for and received the proper combination permit for interior demolition. The contractor said they did not know they needed a permit for the work,” according to Roanoke City Representative, Timothy Martin.
