A Rocky Mount man pleads quilty to the second-degree murder of a 3-month-old.

Xavier Craighead, 21, could face up to 40 years in prison.

Franklin County Commonwealth's Attorney Tim Allen says Craighead confessed to slamming the baby on the floor and then picking him up by the arm and the leg and throwing him in his crib.

"The child had been struck so hard on the head, it caused a lot of bleeding on the interior of the skull, and caused pressure to mount up on the brain," Franklin County Commonwealth's Attorney Tim Allen says.

Craighead said the baby was crying. He also said he was mad at child's mother and high on cocaine.

The mother was dating Craighead at the time. She says she left her son, Ja'marion Holland, in his care for about 45 minutes while she went to Wal-Mart.

She says when she came back the baby was unconscious. The medical examiners report revealed the child had previous injuries. Craighead was charged on two counts of child abuse charges, but those were dropped when he plead guilty to second-degree murder.
