"5 gallons of life" program helping save animals

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Animal Control Unit in Greenville is getting help from Walmart to run its "5 gallons of life" program.

The program is designed to help families struggling to provide water for their animals. Animal Control asked Walmart to donate 50 blue five-gallon pails to help keep the animals hydrated.

The director of Animal Control, Tim Langley, said the summer months can be especially tough on pets. "We're providing a hand up, not a hand out," Langley said. "Is it better to leave that animal there and help provide just a little for that animal or see that animal put to sleep?"

Animal Control said it is also teaming up with Greenville's pet food pantry to help prevent people from having to surrender their animals.
