Roanoke man and dog return from Washington State mudslides

Posted: Updated:
A Roanoke man and his dog are back from Washington State after volunteering in the wake of the tragic mudslides.

Mark Smoot and Levvi traveled across the country to make a difference helping victims.

Mark documented his trip volunteering at the base camp where searchers moved in and out.

He didn't get to help at ground zero, but did what he could to make a difference for those tasked with finding people alive.

He says despite the tragedy he witnessed a lot of good.

“I'm here to tell you, I've never seen such an outpour of humanity and it's hard not to get emotional.  Out of all that ugliness and all that death and destruction there was a young woman there walking around with a brand new baby,” Smoot explained.

Mark says victims were quick to say "thanks" to all of the volunteers for their help.
