89-year-old homeless shelter volunteer named Hometown Hero

Modern Woodmen of America will present their Hometown Hero award Thursday night to an 89-year-old homeless shelter volunteer.

Gene Meador has worked in the RAM House kitchen for 23 years.

He not only helps prepare the food, but also sets up the serving line.

The kitchen volunteers say Gene will pretty much jump-in and help out with anything needed.

“He's my hero.  He's an inspiration to everyone,” explained Tom Brennan, RAM House volunteer.

“God has blessed me with a long life and I think from that standpoint it's in me that I need to do something for others,” Gene said.

Gene started volunteering when he moved back to the area and saw a call for help in the paper.

Even at 89 he has no plans of stopping just yet and he'll keep driving twice a week from his home in Franklin County.
