Drug take back day comes to Roanoke stores

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, Va.—Today is “Drug Take Back Day,” a day to get rid of your old or expired medications with no questions asked.

Several places participated, including the Roanoke Civic Center, Craig County Sheriff’s Office, and several local Kroger grocery stores.

Roanoke County officials say the Kroger near Tanglewood Mall had about 6 garbage bags full of expired medication

“It’s great to see people come out and deliver to us, because it does help instead of putting it down in the water system and helping the environment. It also gets it out of the house to prevent other people from using it,” says Roanoke County Circuit Court Deputy Clerk Michael Galliher.

Officials say about 140 people dropped off items in Roanoke, which is about the same amount as last year.  3.4 million pounds of pills have been turned in nationwide since 2010.
