Survey shows significant drop in Roanoke region homeless population

Posted: Updated:
The Roanoke region continues to see the number of homeless people drop. Each year, the area does a Point in Time survey to count the number of homeless people staying in shelters. Data shows a 16% decrease from 2013 to 2014. Homeless advocates said the decrease is due to community partnerships, better methods to track services provided to the homeless and a greater focus on permanent housing.

For instance, this week the Transitional Living Center (TLC) will close as local organizations look to put more people in homes of their own.

"We'll be expanding more into the supportive housing resources now that they don't have to divert resources to TLC" said Paula Prince, Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Advisory Council. "So it is sort of a win-win. Although we are closing a shelter, we are not losing resources we are re-aiming them in a different direction.

While recent numbers suggest the homeless issue is improving, Prince said, the "Point in Time" survey does not include homeless people who may be staying with family or friends. Therefore, it does not give a complete look at the number of homeless in our area.
