DOWNTOWN ROANOKE - A new drug store will officially open its doors today in downtown Roanoke.

Downtown Drug will be a full-scale pharmacy, while also offering basic medical and daily items.

It's a long time coming for the Star City, with the last downtown pharmacy closing more than 15 years ago.

City leaders said the downtown's rapidly growing population made it a necessity.

More than 1,200 people now call downtown home and they're looking for more convenience.

"12 years ago we had about 12 people living downtown, now we have about 1,200," said Roanoke Mayor David Bowers. "That develops a market. A market for stores, restaurants, grocery stores and for drug stores."

Bowers will be at the ribbon cutting ceremony in front of Downtown Drug today at 11:45 a.m. at the corner of 1st Street and Kirk Avenue.
