WOODFIN, N.C. -

Buncombe County authorities are conducting water rescues after a creek flooded in Woodfin north of Asheville.

Capt. Chris Dorsey with the Woodfin Fire Department said the rescue effort began shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday.

At least 10 people have been rescued after the water flooded several homes. Three people were taken to a hospital for evaluation of possible hypothermia. No serious injuries have been reported.

At least three fire departments and the Red Cross are working in the area.

The National Weather Service has issued urban and small stream flood advisories for 11 counties in western North Carolina. A flash flood watch also is in effect for much of the western part of the state.

A tornado watch was in effect in 14 counties early Tuesday in western North Carolina.
