Severe storms, flash flooding possible

Posted: Updated:

Severe storms are possible today as a strong storm cold front moves through the region.

For today, the severe weather threat will be around until a cold front to the west clears through the region.  The highest risk is east of Highway 29 with areas westward seeing a much lower severe weather potential.  Any severe storms should clear out of the region by 10 p.m. Wednesday.  Hail and wind will be the main threats with any storms that form, but an isolated tornado is possible as well.

Because of the heavy rain from the past couple of days and more coming in Wednesday, flash flooding is possible.  A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through midnight Thursday with one to two additional inches of rain expected.

A River Flood Warning is in effect for the Dan River from Danville to South Boston.  Flood will begin along the river Wednesday night and continue into the weekend.

A River Flood Warning is also in effect for the lower Roanoke River at Randolph.  Flooding is expected to begin Thursday morning and continue into the weekend.
