Moss Arts Center attracts a different kind of tourist to the area

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG - The newly-dedicated Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech is now home to a variety of research and performing acts, which has brought in more than 20,000 visitors just about six months after opening.

The center attracts cultural tourists, who recent studies show tend to take more vacations, stay longer at their destinations and spend more money than the average leisure tourist.

Center director Ruth Waalkes says she has spoken with hotel and restaurant owners in the New River Valley who say their business picks up each time the Moss Arts Center hosts an event. Cultural tourists are also known to take in activities like wine tasting and farmers markets, things that regional tourism director Lisa Bleakley says there is an abundance of in the area.
