Lynchburg Derailment Environmental Impact

Posted: Updated:
It is too early to tell whether there will be lasting effects from the crude oil that spilled in the James River as a result of Wednesday's train derailment in downtown Lynchburg. Environmentalists and investigators alike say it is too soon to assess whether the fact that the river is high and muddy from recent rains is a plus because it may have dispersed the crude oil.

To quote one observer on scene today, "We don't know if dilution is the solution to pollution."

WSLS reporter John Carlin was among the first to survey the river with members of the James River Association, who found a skim of oil on their samples, and observed obvious oil stains on vegetation. downstream from the spill.
