UPDATE: Body of missing boater found at Smith Mountain Lake

Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is working to piece together what exactly happened Friday evening when two boats collided on Smith Mountain Lake.

Officials say it happened near Bernard's Landing near markers R-11 and B-1. 
 
Franklin County Scruggs Dive Team assisted with finding the body of the 37 year old man in 90 feet of water. 

Sue Mattox who lives on the lake says she heard a loud noise.

"We had a flashlight and we would go back and forth with a flashlight so they would know somebody was coming," Mattox said.

VDGIF officials say the people in the boats were fishing when the accident happened.

One person was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries and no word on the condition of the three people involved.

"We are encouraging people who use the waterways and by law in virginia the requirement is that you operate a boat you take a boating safety class,"  Karl Martin the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Spokesperson said.



3 p.m. update: 

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Scruggs Dive team were able to recover the body of the 37-year-old man they had been searching for at Smith Mountain Lake.

9 a.m. update: 

Friday around 9 in the evening, two fishing boats collided.

Five people were thrown in the water and 1 person, a 37 year old is still missing. 

Officials are using sonar technology to locate victim.
