Dorm room intruder, breaking & entering reported at UNC

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Police in Chapel Hill are looking for a man believed to have trespassed into a residence hall before breaking into the Carolina Inn on Saturday, the UNC Department of Public Safety said Sunday night.

Police released a photo of the suspect Monday morning. The photo was taken at the undergraduate library, but police would not say how they determined this was the person they were looking for in connection to the incident.

The campus police said the man, a black male, broke into the Carolina Inn wearing a UNC baseball cap, dark blue windbreaker, blue jeans and a white T-shirt.  He was also seen with a Carolina Inn laundry bag.

Police believe the same man is suspected of trespassing at Craige Residence Hall on campus on the night of May 2. Campus police said a man followed a student to get into Craige and then roamed the lobby and asked a student on site for a cab ride.

Sam Amarasinghe first reported the man after seeing him in a friend's room.

"So I went out into the suite, and I saw my suite mate's door was open and he was just in there and he was looking through the guy's desk," Amarasinghe said.  "I was pretty nervous when it was going down and then after, I sat down and we were all talking about it and I was still kind of, like, shaking."

Craige Residence Hall is a secure building, but Amarasinghe said because some of the entry doors take several seconds to close, he thinks it could be fairly easy for someone to sneak in.

Karen Moon, director of UNC News Services, said the end of semesters is an opportune time for others to gain access to residence halls. She said all external doors of residence halls have electronic locks that are active constantly.

UNC officials said the Alert Carolina website will be updated as soon as more information is available.

UNC's Department of Public Safety is asking students who see something suspicious to call 911, but for information or questions specific to these incidents, they should call (919) 962-8100.
