Scott's Strawberry Farm impacted by winter freeze

Posted: Updated:
BEDFORD COUNTY - This time of year Scott's Strawberry Farm in Bedford County is normally filled with workers picking berries, but now it's bare with no berries to pick.

The owner, JD Scott, says he lost about $80,000 worth of berries which is at least half of his crop for the year. The last time this much damage happened was about 10 years ago.

This weekend is the Strawberry Festival at the farm and while there will be no berries for people to pick, there will be berries bought from a farm in North Carolina. Scott says it cost him about $10,000 to buy the strawberries and he usually breaks even for the festival. He says the festival is for the community especially the children who look forward to it every year.

It's still unclear if or when the berries that survived will be ready but the owner estimates maybe in mid-May.
