Blacksburg Transit teams up with town for cutting edge communication systems

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg Transit is teaming up with the town of Blacksburg to make travel easier for customers.

They are collaborating on a new fiber optic cable system that will allow buses to send updates on their location and capacity via wi-fi.  Transportation officials hope this will allow information to be accurate to within about a 15-second window.

The program's organizer, Timothy Witten, says this fiber optic system is the first of its kind in the state of Virginia, and he hopes this will serve as an example to other transportation systems across the country.

Phase one of the project is scheduled to be complete by the end of this summer, with more expansion planned in the future.
