UPDATE: Evacuation lifted at VMI

Posted: Updated:

VMI officials have just released that the scene has been cleared by investigators.

Original Story:
The Barracks building at VMI was evacuated Tuesday morning after a "suspicious object" was found behind the building.

Stewart MacInnis, spokesperson with Virginia Military Institute tells WSLS that around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning a staff member found the object, and reported it to his supervisor.

A VMI Alert was issued after the object was reported.
"Update 10:13 a.m.: Emergency responders are investigating a suspicious item located behind Barracks. VMI is evacuating back side of New Barracks immediately until further notice."

No details about the object have been released, however MacInnis says a bomb squad was called to the scene for investigation.

MacInnis says the Barracks building has since been cleared, and is now open.

Emergency personnel remain on the scene. Burma Road - a service road behind the Barracks is still closed.

State Police are investigating the scene.

WSLS will continue to keep you updated with the latest.
