DOWNTOWN ROANOKE -
Parts of I581 near Elm Avenue are beginning to reopen after an overnight closure in the region.
Tuesday night marked the first of four nights of overnight work needed to put a traffic switch in place on northbound and southbound I-581 at Elm Avenue.
Overnight, the off-ramp leading from southbound I581 to Elm Avenue was closed-- that has since reopened with new pavement markings in place this morning.
Starting today, the right lane of 581 southbound will open to traffic after being closed for months. All three southbound lanes will remain open until the additional nighttime work can be scheduled to close the left lane.
Once the switch is put in place, the left lanes of northbound and southbound I581 will be closed, leaving the center and right lanes open to traffic. This new traffic pattern will be in place until the end of the improvement project in summer 2015.
