Knoxville, Tn - Willie Carmichael, a 6-8, 210-pound forward from Apopka, Fla., has signed official paperwork to attend Tennessee and join the men's basketball program, head coach Donnie Tyndall announced Wednesday.

Carmichael will be a freshman next season with four years of collegiate eligibility.

He had previously signed to play for Tyndall at Southern Miss but was granted a release after the coaching transition that brought Tyndall to Tennessee.

“Willie Carmichael is my type of frontline guy,” Tyndall said. “He’s tough, athletic and hard-playing. As he gets stronger, he will have a greater and greater impact on our team – both defensively and as a rebounder.”

Carmichael attends Wekiva High School in Apopka, where he was coached by Scott Williams. Carmichael was rated as the 25th-ranked prospect in the state of Florida by FloridaHoops.com.

This past season, Carmichael helped power Wekiva to a 25-5 record, a District 4 second-place finish and the Florida Class 7A regional semifinals. The Orlando Sentinel named him the 7A State Player of the Year.

As a junior in 2012-13, he averaged 11.2 points and 6.9 rebounds while recording six double-doubles and leading the Mustangs to the Florida Class 8A quarterfinals. He averaged 4.8 points and 4.6 rebounds as a sophomore in 2011-12.

He played AAU ball for the Florida Tarheels Elite program.

Carmichael is the fifth member of a UT signing class that includes Devon Baulkman, Jabari McGhee, Detrick Mostella and Kevin Punter.
