Roanoke Chamber of Commerce pushing for Marketplace Fairness Act

Posted: Updated:
It may be out of the national spotlight, but the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce is working to remind people about the internet sales tax bill.

Known as the Marketplace Fairness Act, it would force internet companies to pay the same state taxes as local brick and mortar businesses.

It's currently stalled in Washington.

The chamber is putting a face on the issue with Roanoke businesses while rallying support among local governments.

Roanoke City Council passed a resolution supporting e-fairness and the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors is expected to do the same later this month.

"It is a big national issue, but where do things get done first? At the local level," said chamber president Joyce Waugh. "Our local governments are really where the rubber meets the road."

Waugh is confident some form of the bill will eventually be passed by Congress.
