Roanoke County student makes prom a reality for autistic senior

Posted: Updated:
It's prom season, so high school students all across the area are picking out dresses, tuxes, and planning out the big night.

One Roanoke County student has decided to give up the dance tradition with her boyfriend to make a difference for a fellow student with autism.

Northside Senior Bridget Neal asked Joshua Smith to the prom after learning his mother Kathy posted on Facebook how badly her autistic son wanted to go to the big dance.

“Joshua has talked about going to prom for over a year and I've been wondering how I was going to explain how he may or may not get to go, so it was kind of prayer,” Kathy said.

“My brother has autism also and if I knew he wanted to do something, you know, like this I would want somebody to do that for him,” Bridget explained.

Bridget and Josh's families plan eat together before Saturday’s prom.
