The growing heroin problem is spreading throughout Southwest Virginia.
Like many communities Botetourt County is dealing with it expanding.
Commonwealth's Attorney Joel Branscom has 20-to-30 ongoing heroin cases...compared to just the occasional case two or three years ago.
"I'm just trying to make it an unpleasant experience to have heroin in Botetourt County by being as strict as we can on it, by putting people in the penitentiary and by causing the cost of doing business here to go up," he said. "But it's not solving that problem."
Branscom said more federal cases need to be prosecuted against the suppliers to help on the local level.
Due to the drug's rise, the county is also dealing with more breaking and entering cases as some users steal to feed their habit.
