'American Idol' winner Scotty McCreery: Intruder held pistol to his head

Posted: Updated:

Former American Idol winner Scotty McCreery of Garner said an intruder held a pistol to his head in a dramatic break-in May 5 in Raleigh.

McCreery told the Music Times website that he had some friends had gone out for burgers and returned to watch the movie “Gladiator” when there was a knock at the apartment door.

"One of the guys who lived there, he just figured it was a neighbor," McCreery told Music Times. "He looked through his peep-hole _ the guys didn't have a mask or gloves, so he didn't look suspicious at all.

“My friend opened the door to see if he had a question, and we think the other three guys were nestled up against the door so we couldn't see them in the peephole.

“As soon as the door opened an inch, they barged in, guns waving. The first guy in the room had an assault rifle, and he put that right against the sternum of the guy who opened the door. The main guy, who was casing the living room, he had a pistol to my head and a pistol at another guy's head. It definitely puts your life in perspective when you're staring down the barrel of a pistol."

McCreery is a student at N.C. State.

Officers were dispatched to 2130 Wolf Tech Lane shortly before 2 a.m. Police said three armed suspects entered the residence and took wallets, money and electronics from the victims.

McCreery did not live at the apartment.

No one was injured during the incident. Mikkail Jamal Shaw, 19, of Raleigh has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

McCreery referred the robbery on Twitter, tweeting "Worst morning of my life" at one point and then saying he wanted to "get in my truck when I finally get home" to help "ease the pain of a rough start to the day."

On his Facebook page, McCreery thanked Raleigh police for their quick response.

"Yes, it was definitely a very scary night. Luckily, my friends and I are safe and the Raleigh PD is on the case," McCreery said. "I will share more when the time is right, but as of now we do not want to do or say anything that could hinder the investigation. Thanks to everyone for the prayers and support."
