Creepy, rare fish found in surf at NC island

Posted: Updated:
NAGS HEAD, NC - An unusual fish was found on the NC coast earlier this week.

A Lancetfish turned up in the surf just south of Jeanette’s Pier in Nags Head on Monday night. The pier is part of the North Carolina Aquariums.

Biologists tell pier officials that the deepwater species of fish rarely seen because they hardly ever come close to shore. They’re more of an open ocean fish.

Lancetfishes can grow up to almost seven foot in length.

Very little is known about their biology, though they are widely distributed in all oceans, except the polar seas, reports WGHP.

Lancetfishes possess a long and very high dorsal fin, soft-rayed from end to end, with an adipose fin behind it. The dorsal fin has 41 to 44 rays and occupies the greater length of the back.

Daryl Law sent the photo to FOX8. Law said the fish was released live after being photographed.
