Sign Clutter is a Problem at Smith Mountain Lake

Franklin County leaders are working together with V-DOT to manage the number of signs that pop up this time of year along the road around Westlake.

"Too many signs placed in inconvenient places can create clutter, visual clutter.  There are some concerns about traffic safety if signs are too close
to the road.  It there are too many signs and they are too hard to read then the traveling public has a hard time navigating," explains Franklin County Director of Planning and Community Development.

The sign clutter problem got so bad last year that Franklin County sent a letter to property owners about the issue.  This year Franklin County leaders have visited the businesses in person.

"My staff and I went out and visited out in the field and tried to visit as many businesses personally as we could.  We tried to get face to face so they could put a face with the name.  Our rules are really designed to ensure that the high quality standard we set really endures into the future and a big part of that is making sure it is an attractive place to visit and shop," says Holthouser.
