FACT CHECK: Warner votes with Obama 97 percent of the time

Posted: Updated:
We're more than five months away from November's election, but that's not stopping some early campaigning by the candidates.

Virginia Senator Mark Warner is up for re-election.

He will likely run against former Republican National Party Chairman Ed Gillespie and both sides are already leveling attacks.

In a recent web video, the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV) claimed that Warner voted with President Barack Obama 97 percent of the time during his first term in Washington.

According to PolitiFact, Warner did indeed vote with the president 97 percent of the time, both last year and since 2009.

Although that number is a little misleading since it's relatively common for a senator to vote with his party's president.

According to statistics from Congressional Quarterly, then Senator George Allen voted with President George W. Bush more than 95 percent of the time during his six year term in Washington ending in 2006.

So while the 97 percent claim by the RPV is true, Warner is not significantly out of line with other members of Congress.
