Patient thanks Roanoke County EMS for hiking mountain in snow to respond to call

Posted: Updated:
As we mark the end of "National EMS Week" we know our first responders do so much in our time of need.

One incredible example of that is two Roanoke County first responders hiked more than a mile, in the snow, up a mountain to help a man in severe pain.

This week was the first time Fred Will had talked with the guys at Roanoke County's Clearbrook station since the snowy night of February 13th - the night he broke his leg.

Fred's wife called 911 at 11:02 p.m. and they waited for the ambulance to arrive at their Hunting Hills home.

“I didn't think they were going to be able to get to me.  I really didn't and when my wife said she could see lights that there were a couple people coming up, hiking up the thing that in itself helped relieve the pain,” Will explained.

It was after a VDOT truck got stuck trying to pave the way Captain David Sizemore and Paramedic Blake Alley grabbed their stuff out of the back of the ambulance and started hiking up the mountain.
