Franklin Co. Sheriff's Office increase presence at SML

Posted: Updated:
More law enforcement are patrolling the Smith Mountain Lake area because of the growing number of businesses.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office just moved into a larger substation on Booker T. Washington to help accommodate for the growth.

For the first time, the Sheriff's Office is utilizing volunteers from the Citizen's Academy. So far, the volunteers average answering about 60 to 80 a day.

Major Harry Clingenpeel says Sheriff Bill Overton wanted to make sure the deputies had a more visible location in the community next to the Westlake Towne Center.

"It's important they know they have an office here that they can report a crime or get information that they made need," Major Harry Clingenpeel says.
